Kunnath—A Condensed Monolinear Devanagari Typeface Inspired by the Music of Singer Krishnakumar Kunnath
摘要
Traditionally, music was a social activity that served as a means of knowledge transfer. Today music in India has become commercial. It was found that in the commercially recorded setup in Indian music, Bollywood music accounts for 50% of listeners, and playback is more popular than album music. The research aims to study the impact of singer Krishnakumar Kunnath’s songs and the parallel impact of cover art on the viewers. Primary research was done on 30 teens on music mood and its correlation with visual forms. The contextual references included K.K. and his family’s press interviews and his songs from the early 2000s. The project aims to bring together reminiscence for K.K. and the need for his songs to be recognized by his name rather than only the actors filmed. The research combines traits from his personality and the feel of his music and translates the character into a custom typeface. It is a set of calligraphic explorations in monolinear Devanagari letter design aimed at understanding the psychological impact of various glyphs through the process. It hence establishes a relationship between mood and type. Type conveys his songs’ humility, simplicity, energy, and pitch variations. The final glyph set created some trial words for the title design.
