Humans have utilized signs and symbols since prehistoric times to communicate, capturing daily life, knowledge, and culture. In India, a civilization with a rich history of oral tradition and folk art like Chowk Poorana serves as a medium for storytelling and communication. Practiced in Uttar Pradesh, this art involves women using symbolic designs on floors and walls during various cultural occasions to depict folk stories. We conducted a scoping review to gain a comprehensive understanding of Chowk Poorana and similar folk arts predominantly created on the floor, as well as their prominent aspects, signs, and symbols. A corpus of literature identified through Scopus and Google Scholar online databases has been reviewed in this study. In addition to presenting the state of the art on Chowk Poorana, our findings include four prominent aspects: occasions and rituals, symbols and their contextual relevance, methods and materials, and the transmission of traditional knowledge. Moreover, we present the future research scope on Chowk Poorana folk art for researchers and designers to study, analyze, and present further knowledge, which can increase our understanding of this folk art and how women make use of signs and symbols to narrate folk stories rooted in culture.
