Emojis have become an increasingly integral part of digital communication in modern times. They have the potential of prosody, gestures, emotions and facial expressions of real-life conversations while conversing through digital media. With numerous updates to the collection and appearance of these emojis, their usage has become highly versatile and complex. Existing literature studies emoji usage on a broader scale, focusing more on impactful communication in the context of textual conversations. This study aims to examine the usage of emojis, from mere expression aids to complex semiotic symbols. The research delves into the various intricacies of emojis as an emerging visual language, the specifics of meaning-making in sets of exceedingly similar emojis and the semiotics governing them in various scenarios within defined demographics. The data surrounding usage patterns was collected by combining traditional methods such as interviews along with specially designed gamified experiments to encourage unfiltered candid responses. Moreover, the experiments are iterated on multiple levels, each iteration being observed meticulously and fine-tuned to gain quality responses. The findings underscore the importance of considering various aspects like usage context, diverse connotative meanings, peer influences and personal preferences in understanding how emojis are employed and interpreted. Findings in both these respects, emoji semiotics and gamified experiments, are further analysed considering their prospective application to the field of Visual Communication. Thus, the research provides insights into human behaviour while interacting with digital communication media, especially using emojis, along with the human response to different ways of data collection. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the interplay between emoji and semiotics in visual communication and offers a foundation for future research in this dynamic field.
