In the realm of folk paintings, it is imperative for researchers to acquire a nuanced comprehension of the distinctions existing between traditional and contemporary manifestations of folk paintings. A noticeable gap exists in scholarly investigations that explicitly delineate the parameters characterizing traditional and contemporary folk paintings, rendering the need for a comprehensive exploration into the variables by which researchers can discern and categorize these diverse art forms. The main aim of this research paper is to delineate the various classifications of folk paintings, using Phad Paintings from Rajasthan as a case study. Phad Paintings represent an oral and visual folk tradition in Rajasthan, renowned for depicting folk deities like Pabuji and Devnarayan Ji. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study engaged in content-validated field interviews with Phad artisans and performers to explore different types of Phad paintings. A total of 96 Phad paintings were analyzed and categorized into three overarching groups: Traditional Phad Paintings, Traditional Contemporary Phad Paintings, and Contemporary Phad Paintings, based on codes derived from descriptive coding methods. This research endeavor established clear definitions for the three distinct categories observed in Phad Paintings. Furthermore, the paper provides a methodological framework for categorizing Phad Paintings, which could be adapted for similar art forms, facilitating more systematic classification and further exploration. Consequently, the findings are anticipated to inspire researchers and designers to engage with this subject matter from diverse perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of folk art traditions.
