The gender divide has deep roots. It assumes different forms depending on places, cultures and societies. The gender divide is closely related to the cultural and social dimension of design – how people produce, distribute, and consume designs. This research seeks to identify the semantic signifiers that people perceive to adhere to gender stereotypes. While past research has explored the impact of gender on design, a gap exists in understanding how users categorize these signifiers based on visual attributes and their influence on purchase choices. This research addresses this gap by conducting a two-fold study on user and designer perspectives by employing a study where product modifications were used to identify key signifiers. The outcomes reveal a categorized list of signifiers based on their visual attributes during purchase. This knowledge will empower future design practitioners to create more inclusive products and challenge entrenched gender stereotypes. “Gender”, in this study, refers to societal and cultural roles, behaviours, and attributes considered appropriate for men and women.

摘要
