The initiation of smoking is high among the youth. Adolescents in India often do not perceive smoking negatively despite widespread awareness of health risks, underestimating long-term consequences. Adding to this, misleading terminology like “light” cigarettes and declining public sensitivity towards graphic health warnings (GHWs) further obscure health risks. Additionally, Indian consumer habits like purchasing individual cigarettes rather than boxes reduce their exposure to GHWs as well. It is thus imperative to know what other factors can impede smoking habits. This study investigates how visual cues such as cigarette and filter design and pack structure influence adolescent perception and decision-making regarding smoking. Using a combination of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and card-sorting methods, we explore how adolescents perceive and respond to various visual elements associated with cigarettes. Understanding these factors will inform future interventions to address the issue of youth smoking and promote healthier choices.

摘要
