Comparative Analysis of Heating Decarbonization and Low-Energy Cooling Strategies for Residential Buildings in Northern China

This study explores the potential of heating decarbonization and low-energy cooling solutions in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in residential buildings in northern China. By examining various scenarios involving building envelope improvements, air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), solar water heating, and photovoltaic (PV) systems, the study quantifies the energy and environmental benefits of transitioning from conventional fossil-fuel systems to electrical alternatives. The findings indicate that space heating, domestic water heating, and space cooling are the largest contributors to energy consumption in northern China’s residential sector. Significant reductions in source energy use and CO2 emissions are achieved through the integration of ASHPs and solar technologies, leading to over a 70% decrease in emissions compared to the baseline. The study emphasizes the importance of electrification and renewable energy deployment in achieving China’s carbon neutrality goals. Future work will analyze the impact of vehicle electrification on household energy consumption and the potential need for electrical system upgrades to accommodate increased electricity demand.
