Although vitamin D is related historically to skeletal functions, recently its role in multiple functions of body have been discovered. It has a positive role in follicular development and selection for ovulation. Its immune-mediated actions have a role in implantation and endometriosis. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Deficiency during pregnancy leads to poorer fetomaternal outcomes, e.g. preeclampsia, prematurity, gestational diabetes, anaemia, etc. Not just reproductive aged women have been linked to deficiency of vitamin D; in adolescent girls it has been correlated to premenstrual syndrome, while in postmenopausal women its supplementation has positive effects on the skeletal system, urogenital system, and neurological system as well. Right from birth to death vitamin D plays several roles in female body systems.
