Vitamin D is primarily synthesized in human epithelial cells by photochemical synthesis and also acquired from dietary sources. Recent evidence indicate that apart from the classical effect of regulation in calcium hemostasis and bone metabolism, vitamin D plays a crucial role in nervous system development and function. It has been associated with regulating neurotrophin production, neural differentiation, maturation, and various neuromodulator syntheses. Here, we present an overview of different neurological and psychiatric disorders associated with vitamin D deficiency and current evidence regarding the utility of vitamin D supplementation in them.

摘要
