A Study on the Effect of Crop-Residue Burning (CRB) on Air Quality Over the Megacity Delhi During Winter Season

Crop-Residue Burning (CRB) over northern India is a serious problem for both human health and for the air quality during the rabi and kharif seasons. The data obtained from two Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) installed at DMS (Delhi Milk Scheme)-Shadipur, and NSUT (Netaji Subhas University of Technology)—Dwarka is used for the study of variation of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2 & CO over Delhi during the crop residue burning period in 2023. A detailed analysis of the above parameters ‘Pre—Burning’ (October 1 to October 30, 2023) and ‘Burning’ (November 1 to December 5, 2023) has been carried out. The results showed that PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2 and CO from October to November indicated a Significant percentage changes in air pollution levels over Delhi, value of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2 and CO were found to be increased by nearly, 170%, 130%, 43%, 348%, and 76% respectively over DMS, and 180%, 230%, 237%, 111.45%, and 335% respectively (all values are in ug/m3) over NSIT. Pollutant concentrations are influenced by weather (meteorological parameters) patterns in both seasons (Rabi & Kharif). Air pollution is made worse by regular dust storms during October–November and also due to fireworks celebrations of Diwali and Dusshera. There is an inverse relationship between (relative humidity) RH and (air temperature) AT for PM10 & PM2.5. High wind speed and dominant wind direction in this season promote PM10, PM2.5, NO2, CO and SO2 dispersion on a large scale which leads transboundary movement of gaseous and dust pollutant. MODIS Fire count data’s backward trajectories depict air mass movement from Haryana and Punjab to Delhi via wind movement which deteriorated air quality during the study period.
