New Metrological Challenges in a Sustainable Future
摘要
The pursuit of a sustainable future presents significant challenges and opportunities for metrology, the science of measurement. Accurate and reliable measurements are crucial for monitoring environmental changes, optimizing green technologies, and implementing sustainable practices. Metrological measurements are crucial in various sectors across numerous fields, say manufacturing, healthcare, oil and exploration, power (thermal, hydro, Nuclear), and defense to environmental monitoring and climate change. As the global community increasingly focuses on sustainability and this year UNESCO World Metrology Day (May 20, 20,024) was also celebrated as Metrology for Sustainability as a theme “We Measure Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”. Therefore, metrology faces new challenges and opportunities. Accurate and reliable measurements are essential for monitoring environmental changes, ensuring the quality and efficiency of green technologies, and implementing sustainable practices. This paper briefly highlights the emerging metrological challenges in achieving a sustainable future, emphasizing the need for advancements in measurement science to address environmental, technological, and societal demands. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and standardization in metrology. Organizations such as the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are instrumental in developing universally accepted measurement standards, facilitating data comparability, and enabling coordinated global efforts. Effective collaboration mechanisms, including joint research projects, interlaboratory comparisons, and capacity-building initiatives, are critical for advancing metrological practices and addressing disparities in technological capabilities and resources among countries. The integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) into metrological practices is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing data collection and analysis. Overall, the paper underscores that international collaboration and standardization in metrology are indispensable for achieving sustainability goals, providing the foundation for informed decision-making and innovative solutions to global challenges.
