Design Intervention to Facilitate User-Centric Barriers Related to the Wheelchair Maneuverability for Challenging Topologies

This study investigates design interventions aimed at addressing user-centric barriers related to wheelchair maneuverability in challenging topographies. Recognizing the crucial role of wheelchairs in providing mobility for individuals with disabilities, this research focuses on identifying and mitigating the difficulties users face when navigating uneven, inclined, or otherwise difficult terrains. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing wheelchair designs, the study seeks to pinpoint specific limitations concerning maneuverability and user comfort in varied topographical conditions. Utilizing a methodology that includes user feedback, and expert consultations, the research aims to gain in-depth insights into the daily challenges encountered by wheelchair users in such environments. The findings underscore an urgent need for the development of wheelchair designs that prioritize ease of maneuverability and stability on challenging surfaces. By adopting a user-centered design approach, the study explores potential design solutions that enhance the capabilities of wheelchairs, thereby improving the overall user experience. The study advocates for the implementation of design interventions that address topological barriers, promoting greater independence and confidence for wheelchair users navigating difficult terrains. The study specifically examines the challenges in the context of a conventional wheelchair, aiming to contribute to a more inclusive design. It endeavors a more inclusive design by encouraging the development of user-centric wheelchair designs that enhance mobility for relevant people, even in non-inclusive topographical conditions.
