Connect to Collaborate: A Prescriptive Study on Multi-user-Centric Co-design and Development of a Checklist to Aid Novice Designers

Solving “real-world” problems and devising solutions for complex scenarios in healthcare, such as design for special needs, requires a multifaceted approach and interdisciplinary expertise, and co-design is considered the best fit for the same. To design assistive devices for children, the involvement of stakeholders in the form of co-design partners is an essential component. However, novice design engineers face challenges in establishing connections and gaining comprehensive insights into stakeholders and their needs in this domain. This paper investigates various strategies to aid designers in engaging with the stakeholders and in effectively collaborating with clinical partners/rehabilitation professionals for designing assistive devices for children with special needs. The proposed multi-user-centric co-design approach, mCoDe, is validated, and a prescription in the form of a checklist of strategies is created to aid novice designers in this activity. While this paper focuses solely on the initial phase of the design process, the overall objective of the research is to support co-design across the entire design process.
