Geographical Zoning for Electric Vehicle Charging Station Planning by Using Hierarchical Clustering

The strategic placement of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) plays a pivotal role in fostering the adoption of electric mobility and increasing electric vehicle utilization. This study explores the use of geographical zoning by employing clustering techniques to streamline and simplify the complexity of location selection. Specifically, Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering is applied to identify the optimal sites for EVCS deployment. A comparative analysis of four different linkage methods—single, complete, average, and centroid—was conducted. The findings reveal that complete linkage is the most effective method for geographical zoning in the Bangkok area, resulting in the division of the region into 13 distinct zones. This comprehensive approach to geographical zoning and site selection proves beneficial in optimizing EVCS placement and thereby encouraging broader acceptance of electric vehicles. The subsequent phase will focus on developing a mathematical model to address the EVCS location problem within each zone.
