The incidence and mortality of prostate cancer (PCa) in Chinese men have increased significantly with the ageing of the Chinese population and the Westernization of lifestyles. Awareness of prostate cancer is low among Chinese men, and their willingness to seek help for prostate disease is low. This study designed and developed a virtual reality health education tool (E-PCP) to improve the health knowledge level, learning interest and emotional participation of middle-aged and elderly men in China. In particular, the design of the E-PCP is based on multisensory learning theory, combining visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic multisensory combinations, focusing on audio-visual interpretation, 3D haptic modelling, and virtual competitive games. Researchers recruited 70 male participants between the ages of 45 and 75 in a community-based setting to test the educational effects of E-PCP on participants. Participants completed a knowledge test questionnaire and underwent a semi-structured interview after using the E-PCP. The study's findings showed that the E-PCP significantly improved participants’ health literacy in PCa and willingness to initiate screening activities. In addition, participants expressed their strong enthusiasm for learning and their willingness to continue learning about cancer and prevention in the future. To the best of our knowledge, VR has rarely been used in health education scenarios in the past, especially in the context of male genitourinary health. Overall, VR technology has shown the potential to promote health education and behavior change and may be used for a wider range of health education topics.
