Pharmaceuticals Supply Chain Integrity: Ensuring the Authenticity of Drugs and Preventing Counterfeit Medicine by Leveraging Smart Contracts, NFT, IPFS, and Distributed Ledgers Technology

The pharmaceutical industry faces significant challenges in ensuring supply chain transparency, ethical sourcing, and data integrity. Traditional pharmaceuticals supply chain often falls short in providing the necessary traceability and accountability. This paper proposes a novel supply chain management system that leverages cutting-edge blockchain technologies such as smart contracts, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) to address these issues. Our system is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the pharmaceutical sector, prioritizing traceability, ethical sourcing, and data integrity. We evaluate the system’s performance on four EVM-compatible platforms: Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Fantom, and Celo, demonstrating its adaptability and potential for operational efficiency. Our research highlights the significant potential of blockchain technology in revolutionizing pharmaceutical supply chain management, fostering trust, and ensuring ethical practices.
