In recent years, the global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has surged, driven by their potential to reduce fossil fuel dependence and lower environmental impact. However, this widespread adoption faces significant barriers, particularly the insufficient infrastructure for charging stations. Many current solutions involve charging stations powered by electricity from traditional, fossil-fuel-based grids, which can lead to increased stress on the power distribution networks and exacerbate environmental issues, such as heightened peak demand. To mitigate these effects, integrating renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, presents a sustainable alternative by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This approach requires careful planning and adjustments to the power distribution system to accommodate the growing demand for energy as more EVs are added to the grid. This paper offers an extensive review of PV-based EV charging solutions, examining both standalone PV-EV systems and hybrid PV-EV-grid configurations, along with their control strategies. It critically evaluates the challenges and limitations in current EV charging technologies, especially in relation to large-scale EV integration into the power grid. Additionally, the paper discusses various scheduling methods and control topologies for EV charging systems found in the literature.
