China’s Smart City Evolution: Leveraging ICTs for Sustainable Urban Growth

China has responded to the challenges of rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, and infrastructure strain by developing smart cities. In order to promote sustainable urban growth and match digital innovations with its more general sustainability objectives, the nation has embraced information and communication technologies, or ICT. To improve urban management, increase resource efficiency, and lessen environmental effects, China's smart cities make use of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and cloud computing. At the heart of this change are the New Urbanization Plan and the Digital China initiative, which support inclusive urban growth, energy efficiency, and green development. The concrete advantages of AI-powered urban mobility and citizen-centric services are demonstrated by notable examples such as Shenzhen's digital governance model and Hangzhou's City Brain. But the quick development of smart cities also brings up issues like cybersecurity, data privacy, and the digital divide, all of which call for strict regulation and careful handling. China's smart city strategy addresses climate change and promotes sustainable development while establishing the country as a global leader in integrating ICT for urban resilience. In addition to providing answers for Chinese cities, these initiatives teach important lessons for international urban sustainability projects.
