Development of a Standardized Plastic Footprint Measurement Tool for Combating Marine Plastic Pollution

Globally, marine ecosystem and its associated aquatic life have been seriously threatened due to the increasing disposing of plastic wastes into the marine environment. Although due to the versatility, malleability and cost-effectiveness have increased its production and consumption, it is eventually discarded as waste. The upsurging of micro–nano plastics into the environment demonstrates the systemic failure of the take-make-dispose consumption/linear model and draws the attention towards the need for a paradigm shift towards circular material flow models. Furthermore, there are various methodologies reported by the various companies, organization’s, institutions and governments in order to tackle the plastic pollution, there is no well-established method to measure the extent of marine plastics that have been unscientifically disposed into the oceans. Accordingly, this chapter emphasizes on impact of plastics on the environment, existing and emerging plastic footprint methodologies. The environmental impact assessment and circular economy concepts should be used synergistically implemented to identify the best scenarios that would ultimately help in identification and quantification of marine plastics. Additionally, it also highlights the role of stakeholders that will help the policy makers and decision makers in understanding the objectives associated with different footprint methodologies.
