Plastic Pollution Disrupting the Aquatic Ecosystem

Plastic pollution has created havoc for the ecosystem in recent years. With the advancement of technology, there is an increase in plastic pollution and it has contaminated all the ecological parameters. Plastic pollution has become an acute threat to aquatic ecosystems worldwide, unsettling marine and freshwater environments with far-reaching consequences. It is a complex, multi-layered issue that impacts all levels of the food web, from tiny plankton to large marine mammals, and affects biodiversity, ecosystem services, and even human health. Marine animals, like fish, seabirds, turtles, and mammals, frequently ingest plastic particles assuming it as food. When ingested, plastic can block digestive tracts, reduce appetite, and ultimately lead to malnutrition, starvation, or death. Entanglement in larger plastic items like fishing nets, bags, and rings often results in physical injuries, impaired movement, and drowning. Plastics release toxic chemicals, including Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which leach out into digestive system of the animals where in these toxins accumulate in their bodies, disrupting hormonal systems and affecting reproduction and development. Through this review, the multifaceted problem of plastic contamination is addressed. This study aims to review the plastic pollution, mitigation, and remediation of the damaged areas. Furthermore, after observation, the inference resides in the current plastic applications, benefits, adverse effect, and risk assessment, we augmented the inculcation of technological mitigation ways to curb this pollution from its roots. Through this study various pathways were also determined toward sustainable use of plastics and future research ways to solve this burgeoning problem.
