The growing global demand for finite resources has intensified the need for sustainable alternatives, particularly in biofuel production. Electro-fermentation emerges as an innovative technique that integrates electrochemical principles with traditional fermentation processes to enhance microbial productivity and biofuel yields. This chapter explores the potential of electro-fermentation in addressing the challenges associated with conventional biofuel production methods. Electro-fermentation involves the direct supply or removal of electrons via electrodes, serving as a reducing source for microorganisms. This approach offers several advantages, including increased biomass yield, improved redox and pH control, and facilitation of single-target product synthesis. Studies have reported up to threefold increases in product yield with minimal energy input, highlighting the technique’s potential to revolutionize industrial fermentation processes. Despite its promise, electro-fermentation faces significant challenges in scaling up to industrial production. These include optimizing numerous variables such as electrode materials, reactor design, and understanding the underlying biochemical mechanisms. The interdisciplinary nature of the field, encompassing biochemistry, electrochemistry, and materials science, necessitates comprehensive expertise to address existing issues. While electro-fermentation shows potential for enhancing sustainability in biofuel production, further research is required to optimize the process for large-scale applications. Addressing these challenges could pave the way for more efficient and economically viable biofuel production, contributing to global efforts in sustainable energy development.

摘要
