Physical Performance, Psychological and Safety Considerations in Cricket Warm-Ups

Warm-ups are an accepted and essential part of the training and match day preparation. They allow the cricket athlete to prepare for the upcoming demands physiologically and psychologically whilst working towards cricket-specific demands. Alongside an increase in muscle temperature being a well-known change, the physiological benefits are numerous and include changes in muscle metabolism, muscle fibre performance and conduction velocities. The Raise, Activate, Mobilise and Potentiate (RAMP) approach to the warm-up allows an all-encompassing method to prepare the athletes for their match demands whilst collaborating and integrating with the skills coaches to make it specific and fun. Within cricket, there is an opportunity to tailor the warm-up to the sport as well as both specific and individual based on their style and injury history, i.e. consider a fast bowler with a previous hamstring injury. Understanding the mechanisms of the physiology that can affect performance through warm-ups or a priming exercise will allow the coach to implement different strategies leading into competition for optimal power and speed outputs, i.e. Post Activation Potentiation (PAP). Whether it is a T20, One-day or multi-day match will also guide the coach’s decision-making around the methods, intensity and timing of the warm-ups and whether to bring the group together or work on an individual level.
