Like all sports, effective injury prevention in cricket relies on identifying and mitigating modifiable injury risk factors. Pre-participation physical screening tests enable coaches and sports science and sports medicine professionals to evaluate these risk factors to determine player readiness, monitor progress and guide training interventions. Because the physical demands of cricket vary considerably based on game format, player position (e.g. batter vs bowler), competition level, etc., pre-participation screening protocols should be flexible but comprehensive and encompass several aspects of performance, including neuromuscular control, muscular fitness (strength, power, endurance and flexibility) and cardiorespiratory fitness, including speed. Pre-participation screening of neuromuscular control can incorporate multi- and single-component assessment tools. Multi-component assessments include a mix of quantitative and qualitative tests of physical performance and provide a quick but holistic view of a player’s readiness for sport and guide the need for more specialised testing using single-component tests of motor control and/or muscular fitness. Specific areas of interest for cricket, particularly seam bowlers, should include assessing single limb control under load, lumbopelvic control and shoulder stability. Assessment of muscular fitness should emphasise assessment of lower limb and shoulder strength and power, trunk endurance and flexibility of the hip, knee and ankle flexors and shoulder rotators. Assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness should encompass field-based tests to determine maximal aerobic and anaerobic power, maximal running speed and agility; elements key for sustained performance and recovery. The purpose of this chapter is not to define how to conduct pre-participation screening for cricket but to outline several options for assessing key performance elements of cricket and discuss the suitability of these tests within community, sub-elite and elite cricket environments.
