Throwing and Fielding Biomechanics and Associated Injury in Cricket

In the modern era, fielding in cricket, which is primarily intended to dismiss a batter or reduce the run rate, continues to receive increased consideration as a match-winning discipline. Efficiency in the field is based on catching, timely ball retrieval and proficient throwing. The numerous skills required to achieve this are explored in the chapter. Specifically, the kinematic and kinetic impact of various throwing techniques, following several approaches, on the shoulder and elbow are highlighted. Further, the most common injuries sustained whilst fielding across all formats, gender and level of participation are presented. To date the primary skills associated with upper limb injuries whilst fielding are catching and throwing, closely followed by diving. Whilst the latter may also contribute to lower limb injuries, sprinting is superior as a mechanism of injury to this body area. Finally, consideration of concussion risk whilst fielding is highlighted.
