Fast Bowling Biomechanics and Associated Injury in Cricket

Cricket bowlers, particularly fast bowlers, sustain more injuries than any other playing role. Fast bowlers who sustain lumbar bone stress injury, among the most prevalent injuries in cricket, demonstrate numerous technical differences from fast bowlers who do not. The best predictors of future lumbar bone stress injury are rear hip flexion at back foot contact and lumbopelvic flexion, which together correctly classified 88% of fast bowlers into injured and non-injured groups, including 97% of all lumbar bone stress injury cases. Fast bowlers who demonstrate more than 30 degrees of rear hip flexion at back foot contact and less than 3 degrees of flexion at front foot contact are at significantly higher risk of lumbar bone stress injury. Other technical characteristics that are associated with lumbar bone stress injury include lumbopelvic lateral flexion, thoracolumbar lateral flexion, thoracolumbar rotation, rear knee flexion, front hip flexion and pelvic tilt. The risk of lumbar bone stress injuries can be prevented through a multidisciplinary, holistic approach; however, understanding of bowling technique is critical for developing any injury prevention strategies.
