Sports injuries are more than just physical setbacks; they can profoundly affect an athlete’s mind and emotions. This chapter explores the psychological side of sports injuries, offering insights for athletes, coaches, medical staff, and others to better understand the mental challenges that come with getting hurt in sports. The chapter delves into the antecedents and responses to sports injury highlighted through various theories such as the stress and injury model and cognitive appraisal model. As per the stress and injury model, athletes experiencing high stress are more likely to get injured. The cognitive appraisal model suggests that athletes’ emotional and behavioural responses are linked to each other and are influenced by how the athletes interpret the situation. Understanding of these theories takes us further on to the practical applications of helping athletes psychologically handle injuries. Interventions, such as self-talk, stress management techniques, goal-setting and visualisation, can help athletes with prevention as well as rehabilitation of injuries. Sports psychologists can tailor such interventions to the athlete’s specific needs, impacting their recovery.
