摘要
Preservatives are essential components in ophthalmic products, ensuring their sterility and extending shelf life as they play a critical role in maintaining the microbial integrity of formulations therefore safeguarding patient safety. The selection of the right preservative depends on multiple factors, including the product formulation, duration of use, and patient-specific considerations. Preservatives are indispensable for maintaining the sterility of ophthalmic products, but their potential toxicity necessitates careful selection and evaluation. Benzalkonium chloride being the most frequently used preservative is being frequently reported for its toxic effects. Preservatives that lessen or completely eradicate ocular discomfort are to be a significant advancement for both patients and physicians too.
