This review paper presents a novel mobility aid called VisionCane, representing a significant innovation in assistive device technology aimed at enhancing mobility and independence for visually impaired individuals. The VisionCane utilizes advanced computer vision algorithms along with a Bluetooth communication unit to “see” obstacles in the user’s surroundings and provide real-time auditory feedback through a wireless earbud. This review discusses the technological aspects and design features that contribute to VisionCane’s reliability in object detection. The state-of-the-art image processing, object recognition, and sensor fusion techniques that enable the functionality of the VisionCane will be assessed. Possible applications in everyday life will be explored, alongside the limitations of such applications and future directions aimed at improving accessibility and enriching the user experience. Findings suggest that intelligent devices like VisionCane will significantly enhance the quality of life for visually impaired individuals as advancements in computer vision and wearable technology continue.
