Advancing Biomass Utilization in Malaysia: Challenges, Opportunities, and Policy Implications

Global dependency on fossil fuel use for energy generation has created not just environmental concerns, but also the necessity of seeking alternate resources for the production of green energy. Numerous countries are currently pursuing attempts to utilize a variety of biomass sources that are not limited to crops, but also include certain types of waste with a high potential for bioenergy development. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of Malaysia’s biomass market demand and supply chain management framework, as well as detailed insight into the type of biomass that is available and the methods employed to utilize them. In this context, Malaysia consumes millions of energies each year, with just a small fraction being used to generate energy from biomass waste, while the remaining is left to rot and accumulate for disposal. This underutilized residual waste could also be used to generate valuable energy, such as electricity, which will also be further discussed in this chapter. One worrying concern in Malaysia is a lack of technological advancement, which prevents the country’s powerhouse biomass industry from fully incorporating biomass utilization. Additionally, a lack of revenue generated by inefficient supply chain management slows down the use of bioenergy in Malaysia. To accomplish this, government actions and policies are crucial in accelerating the growth of biomass utilization in Malaysia, while simultaneously addressing environmental issues through the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The imperative of refocusing our efforts on alternative energy sources to generate green energy is essential, as national fossil fuels reserves are projected to run out in 30–40 years.
