The Way Forward for Emerging Trends and Innovations in Biomass Processing for Circular Economy
摘要
The transition to a sustainable circular economy is increasingly reliant on innovative biomass processing technologies that transform renewable resources into valuable products. This chapter explores emerging trends and innovations in biomass utilization, focusing on advanced bioconversion technologies, integrated biorefineries, and bioproduct diversification. It highlights the potential of biomass to address global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and waste management. The chapter examines Malaysia’s biomass supply chain, demand, and market dynamics, emphasizing the role of the palm oil industry in driving renewable energy production. Key topics include biomass production and energy extraction, enzymatic bioconversion, biosynthesis of solvents, low-cost recycling of agricultural waste using black soldier flies, and electricity generation from biomass. Additionally, the chapter discusses the sustainability of biomass utilization from engineering and economic perspectives, alongside policy and regulatory considerations. By integrating technological advancements and supportive policies, biomass processing can significantly contribute to the circular economy, fostering sustainable development and resource efficiency.
