The increased energy demand in Malaysia creates a pressing dilemma as the nation seeks sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and environmental preservation. Biomass, considered a sustainable resource, has shown promising potential as an alternative. Malaysia’s substantial agricultural industries produce massive amounts of biomass waste, including empty fruit bunches (EFB), palm kernel shells (PKS), rice husks, and wood chips. These materials hold the potential to be used as bioenergy and high-value product conversions, which help reduce national waste while augmenting the national energy mix. The chapter conducts an in-depth examination of biomass applications throughout Malaysia’s renewable energy framework. The assessment explores modern biomass conversion approaches, including biogas creation, pyrolysis, and gasification methods, and their effectiveness in generating power from biomass. Investigating the economic aspects shows how biomass utilization creates employment opportunities, rural economic growth, and financial returns. The National Biomass Action Plan 2023–2030 provides government support to the industry’s development, which is examined in this chapter. The extensive power of biomass presents numerous challenges to its widespread, large-scale adoption. For Malaysia to maximize biomass energy benefits, several problems need to be addressed. Those challenges include inconsistent feedstock supply, high initial investment expenses, and technical barriers. The industry should also pay close attention to sustainability factors, including managing potential deforestation impacts and processing emissions. Malaysia aims to reach leadership status in biomass energy within the region by strategically implementing engineering approaches combined with economic motivations and sustainable planning mechanisms. The chapter provides essential information for investigators, engineers, public officials, and industry professionals who wish to promote biomass exploitation while making Malaysia more sustainable and zero-carbon.
