There were noteworthy interconnections between Physical Education (PE), School Sport (SS), and Health Education (HE) in the lead up to the formal culmination of the subjects in the key learning area (KLA) of Personal Development, Health, and Physical Education (PDHPE) in NSW and Health and Physical Education (HPE) on a national scale; however, these connections were implied rather than formally traced in the documentation of a history of education or curriculum history. Therefore, this chapter represents a new scholarship on the history of the disciplines in the NSW education system by recording the ‘untold’ overlapping, yet discrete, nature of the three subjects from 1880 to 1989. In addition, the extent to which the undefined relationships during this time span created a shift in the status of the subjects compared to one another and other subjects in the school curriculum as part of the establishment of PDHPE and HPE will be revealed. The defining eras that signposted major transitions in the collective history of the subjects were similar to the eras reflecting the individual curriculum histories; therefore, this combined pre-history will be presented according to the: (i) Military Years (1880–1919), (ii) Eugenic Years (1920–1949), and (iii) Pinnacle Years (1950–1989). A sample, rather than an exhausted presentation, of the abundant evidence exemplary of the longstanding interconnections between the subjects will be provided under each period to prevent repetition, as many references to these connections have already been elucidated in this book.
