The bureaucratic nature of schooling and curriculum has meant a general policy amnesia and a lack of due regard for curriculum history in the Australian research setting, with the net effect creating gaps and silences in the archives of histories of education (Green, 2003). Curriculum histories help fill these gaps and overcome the silences by presenting a timeline of events and highlighting specific past traditions and factors as shaping the nature and ‘identity’ of a school subject (Goodson, 1983; Musgrave, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1988). To contextualise the longstanding curriculum histories of Physical Education (PE), School Sport (SS), and Health Education (HE), the literature pertinent to the ‘theory’ and ‘practice’ of a history of education, curriculum history, and socio-cultural perspectives to curriculum will be explored in this chapter to frame the dominant pedagogies characterising the three subjects over time in subsequent chapters.

摘要
