Chinese inter-clausal anaphora presents a problem of variation. This chapter outlines the motivation and design of the present study, drawing on observations from the pilot investigation—such as the types of anaphora and structural or referential preferences—which serve as the basis for the subsequent analysis. In addition, it provides an overview of the chapters that follow.
