Today, despite the large number of politically significant activities, given the challenges researchers face in obtaining documents and materials, written complaints and petitions constitute the main source of textual information we are able to obtain about rural politics. For this reason, the author shall presume, for purpose of analysis, that these forms of correspondence are a commonly used method for communicating one’s grievance to the government, while acknowledging that these are not the only ones. The author discusses four cases in this chapter, which took place in different locations. The author hopes the analysis will shed light on some of the general features of rural politics, including the goals of the participants, their underlying ideas, and their organizational structure.
