Relapse of Stuttering
摘要
This chapter examines the phenomenon of relapse in stuttering, focusing on its causes, management, and prevention within a concise framework. Relapse depends on contributing factors like psychological triggers (stress, low self-esteem), environmental influences (social pressures, lack of support), and physiological aspects (neurological changes, developmental shifts). Adolescence is identified as a high-risk period for relapse. The chapter discusses Starkweather’s holistic approach to relapse, emphasizing the importance of addressing emotional factors alongside speech techniques. The chapter offers practical relapse prevention strategies, including continued therapy, family involvement, mindfulness, and healthy lifestyle habits. Parents and teachers are guided on reinforcing speech strategies, fostering supportive environments, and collaborating with speech therapists. Cultural considerations, including myths about stuttering in India, are discussed to reduce stigma and promote understanding. By providing actionable solutions and encouraging collaboration among caregivers, educators, and individuals who stutter, this chapter aims to maintain fluency gains and support long-term communication confidence.
