An atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) is a condition in which the ventricular septal inlet (inlet septum) is defective as a result of defective fusion or dysplasia of the endocardial cushion during cardiac development. This results in the following morphological features (Figs. 5.1 and 5.2).
