Planning for Smart Village Initiatives Towards Climate Resilience in Natural Resource Management: Case Study of Udaipur District, India

The effects of climate change and natural resource depletion are closely interconnected issues, as climate change significantly impacts these resources and, in turn, the conservation efforts in question play a pivotal role in the mitigation of the effects of climate change. Meanwhile, climate change, food security, and natural resource management are the initial stages in developing a feasible climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy. The objective is to devise a holistic and sustainable plan for smart village initiatives that enhance climate resilience in natural resource management. However, there is a gap between digital information on natural resource management and climate, aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change, as well as social-environmental sustainability. This limits future research into the smart village’s potential self-sufficiency in India. In this research work, a microanalysis of natural resources in rural regions using a variety of remote sensing indicators and then questionnaires to assess local people’s perceptions and knowledge about climate change adaptation. The study areas have four Gram Panchayats in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, namely Bambora, Bori, Sulawas, and Sihad, to examine natural resources and climatic perceptions regarding the smart village initiatives. The findings indicate that the availability of water resources is a primary driver of the concentration of agricultural and related activities. As a result of water scarcity, people migrate to cities in search of jobs and essentials. The results indicate that natural resource depletion and agricultural productivity occur in all villages. The findings also show that this research area lacks environmental information, perspectives on natural resource management, and climate change adaptation. The findings of this research will assist in determining the necessity for climate change adaptation in the context of India’s smart village initiatives, specifically in relation to natural resource management and conservation.
