Among the Four Great Inventions of ancient China, papermaking and printing are the most closely related. For over a thousand years, paper has been the primary material for printing, and it has been essential for the advancement of printing technology. Without paper, no country or region could have developed printing. Therefore, a comprehensive study of printing technology necessarily includes an examination of the history of papermaking. Dr. Thomas Francis Carter, a renowned American scholar, emphasized that the invention and development of printing were fundamentally rooted in the development of papermaking. In his world-famous book The Invention of Printing in China and Its Spread Westward (1925), the first chapter is dedicated to the invention of papermaking. His approach should serve as a standard model for writing such works.
