Experimental Study on Utilization of Wood Ash and Bamboo Fiber in Concrete

Utilization of waste materials has gained significant results in promoting sustainable construction practices. This paper examined the impact of bamboo fiber as an additive and wood ash as a partial cement replacement on the compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete. This study utilized a constant 0.5% bamboo fiber as an additive and varying percentages—10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, of wood ash as a partial cement replacement. There are sixty (60) concrete specimens produced. Each mix design has ten (10) concrete specimens, five (5) concrete cylinder samples for compressive test, and five (5) concrete beam samples for tensile test. Each concrete specimen was tested after twenty-eight (28) curing days. The compressive strength of the concrete was obtained in accordance with the ASTM C39 and the tensile strength of the concrete was obtained in accordance with ASTM C293. The compressive strength and tensile strength tests revealed a gradual increase in both compressive and tensile strength in concrete mixture containing up to 20% wood ash and a constant 0.5% bamboo fiber as compared to conventional concrete. Beyond the 20% wood ash with a constant 0.5% bamboo is the decrease in strength for both compressive and tensile strength. Overall, the concrete mixture containing 20% wood ash and 0.5% bamboo fiber obtained the optimum strength for both compressive and tensile properties.
