Formulation, Physicochemical and Anti-Microbial Evaluation of Herbal Soaps of Solanum Lycopersicum and Tagetes Erecta

Since skin diseases have a substantial impact on people as well as communities, they are important public health concerns. Because herbal medicines include anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, they are being employed as cosmeceuticals for a range of skin disorders. The focus of this project is development of herbal soaps of tomato fruit and marigold flower and evaluating physicochemical properties including pH, foaming ability, free-alkali content, moisture content, emulsification, and anti-microbial properties. Herbal soaps were made using the cold saponification technique, which combines oils and lye sodium hydroxide solution. The form-forming potential of the in-house developed herbal soaps were collated to the marketed herbal soaps and a non-herbal reference soap. Furthermore, the formulated herbal soap demonstrated inhibitory activity against S. aureus (up to 27 mm, a twofold increase), P. aeruginosa (up to 22 mm, a 1.5-fold increase), and E. Coli bacteria (up to 26 mm, a twofold increase) compared to commercial soaps and reference soap. In conclusion, the synthesis of herbal soaps using tomato fruit and marigold flower extracts showed promising results in terms of physicochemical properties and anti-microbial effects. The use of these plant species in herbal soap production appears to be efficient, offering a natural and effective alternative to synthetic skincare products.
