Introduction

Emerging technological advances have enabled the development and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), with applications ranging from environmental monitoring and fire tracking systems to combat surveillance and monitoring. The IoT-based WSN consists of one or more sink nodes with many systematically or randomly distributed sensor nodes in a given area [1]. Every sensor node is tasked with collecting data in its immediate surroundings, performing minimal computation on the obtained data, and sending streams of the gathered data to the sink for further processing via one or multiple hops [2]. Sensor nodes are outfitted with wireless communications [3] to transmit data to the sink to avoid placement in inaccessible or harsh environments [4].
