A Study on the Particle Size Distribution of Sand: Sieve Analysis and Laser Diffraction Method

In the engineering industry, the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) of soil is crucial, as this will define the characteristics and behaviours of soil under a building and directly change its design parameters. Widely known, the soil types in Malaysia are either sand, clay, silt, or even a combination of them. Even though sand may not be as weak as clay, it may appear very dangerous under certain conditions such as loose and dry sand, which is prone to erosion and liquefaction under seismic activity. While there are many ways to determine the PSD of soils, this paper presents a comparison between sieve analysis and the laser diffraction method to identify the soil particle size distribution of sand and assess its reliability if widely used. The test was conducted using the dry sieve method and a wet unit of HORIBA Partica LA960-V2 for the laser diffraction method. The results of particle size distribution obtained from sieve analysis and the laser diffraction method were plotted, creating two different graphs. The results also showed differences in the particle size distribution of the sand sample obtained from sieve analysis and the laser diffraction method and were compared to determine its accuracy and dependence on each method.
