We get a better understanding of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers’ significant influence on the spatial dynamics of Chongqing as we walk along its riverbanks (See Fig. 4.1). These rivers serve as the city’s horizontal foundations, determining historical settlements, economic lifelines, and cross-cultural interactions in addition to being geographical divides. The riverfront walks provide an open, spacious experience where the city unfolds laterally, in contrast to the vertical labyrinths of Chongqing’s inner districts. Through the river’s continuity, we can traverse Chongqing’s multi-layered history, from the historic docks that once managed enormous volumes of people and goods to the contemporary waterfront promenades that encourage leisurely walks.
