Since the early 2020s, we witnessed the artificial intelligence (AI) boom when ChatGPT (2022) and GitHub Copilot (2021) appeared publicly. Everyone tried them, naturally including informatics students, and soon AI-based tools became widely popular. Experiencing the possibilities, a vast number of students began to believe that they do not have to learn anything from now, as AI knows everything ever written on the internet. Can it be true that programmers do not have to do any implementations anymore—AI will solve everything for of them? Will there still be a need for IT specialists and informatics education at all? Has it become unnecessary to train new IT specialists? The answer is twofold, AI can significantly help in coding, but it does not substitute the human programmers’ work, and it will not do it within the foreseeable future. What will be the impact of AI on programming education? Is it enough to build their future careers by teaching them how to use AI tools, or do we need to change the classical idea to give our students general knowledge as a good starting base for further self-development? We think we need to educate students in basic logical thinking, problem solving, while inspiring them to develop specific IT skills beyond the basics. There is still big demand for IT specialists in the market, but not for beginners, the industry needs specialists. The solution for beginners is to improve themselves in special fields to an expert status, in which university must help.
