Comparative Environmental Evaluation of Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies, Infrastructure and Charging Stations in Malaysia: Towards a Sustainable Energy Transition

Increasing the speed of the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is expected not only to help decarbonise the transport sector but also to attract investments. The commitment to these goals is also envisaged by the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on developing a regional EV ecosystem (ASEAN Secretariat Indonesia 2023a). However, ASEAN countries like Malaysia face several challenges that stand in the way of EV adoption. This chapter discusses EVs, the charging technologies available and their pros and cons, particularly in regard to charging infrastructure, and the charging power and power transfer between the EV and the grid. A comparison of various energy sources found that in average monthly emissions per km travelled there is a 20% difference between an internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) and a charged EV charged with energy from Malaysia’s current electricity mix. Hydrogen and solar PV energy sources supplied for EV charging are a better option. Based on the amount of monthly fuel sales, if Malaysia were to replace about 50% of the ICEVs with EVs, emissions could drop significantly, but higher adoption rates may yield greater reductions. However, this shift could strain the grid without upgrades, and a fossil fuel-heavy energy mix might offset the benefits.
