Deploying clean energy through renewable forms of energy is key to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions across the world. While Asian economies are no different in this respect, the challenge for the deployment of renewable energy arises from the fact that the infrastructure required for renewable forms of energy is fundamentally different from that needed for traditional forms. As the cost of deploying renewable energy in Asia is higher than in developed economies, public finance plays an especially important role. In this chapter a review is made of the specific roles that public finance mechanisms can play going forward to increase the deployment of renewable energy in Asian economies. It identifies how public finance can be effective in enhancing the deployment of renewable resources and examines four key Asian economies that are trying to rapidly increase the share of electricity generated from renewable energy in their total power generation.

摘要
