Exploring the Use of Generative AI for Developing Reflective Practice and Critical Thinking in Nursing Undergraduate Education
摘要
With its increasing use in the healthcare arena Artificial Intelligence Technologies (AIT) have the potential to transform nursing practice and education, including the delivery of undergraduate nursing education. The purpose of this chapter is to explore undergraduate nursing students’ experiences of actively using AIT in clinical placement and the influence of using these on stimulating critical thinking. Utilising a participatory action research approach, learners in this study found that certain AIT, in the form of Gen AI platforms stimulated reflection and enabled them to think critically in practice. Findings suggest that learners remain sceptical of the use of Gen AI practice due to a myriad of reasons. The main concern being the uncertainty of Gen AI’s source of information. Findings from this study indicate that more education is required and upskilling of faculty in the tertiary and vocational space to prepare learners for the use of Gen AI. There remains limited scholarly work exploring learners’ experiences in utilising AIT, particularly within the nursing practice space. It is therefore timely to reflect on the use of AIT in this educational space to explore learners’ experiences when using AIT, and how AIT may potentially help build on knowledge and development of critical thinking skills to prepare learners for the complexity of real-world patient care situations.
