This chapter discusses the current system of commodified health care as a structural sin that undermines the rights of the poor to affordable and quality health care according to Catholic social teaching. It also incorporates the sociological concept of social structure to clarify the empirical nature of the Catholic Church’s doctrines on structural sin and spiritual social transformation for the laity as applied to health care. It argues that the practice of lay Catholic social spirituality for health workers necessitates transformative action for the conversion of structural sin in the commodified health care industry to uphold health care as a basic human right as well as protect the rights of the poor in society.
