Quantifying the Cooling Potential of Nature-Based Solutions to Mitigate the Urban Heat Island: A Case Study of the City of Bhopal
摘要
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon is one of the most prominent climatic characteristics of cities around the world. This affects the public health and well-being, socio-economic activities, and ecological balance of the urban area. Nature-based solutions (NbS) are key to reducing these harmful impacts of the UHI. NbS help in limiting the thermal gains of built surfaces and reducing the surrounding temperature by creating a ‘cooling effect’. The present study focuses on quantifying this cooling effect of NbS and its mitigation potential. Urban Green Areas (UGA) are taken as the NbS measure under study. 84 UGA patches are identified for this, taking the urban development region of Bhopal city as a case study. The cooling effect for the UGA is calculated by identifying the Cooling Effect Distance (CED) and Cooling Effect Intensity (CEI). Further, the CED and CEI calculated are compared for different landscape characteristics of UGA patches i.e. size, shape, and vegetation features. This gives the influence of landscape characteristics on the cooling effect of UGA. The relationship between variables is obtained using correlation analysis and scatter plots. The study identifies the perimeter of UGA as the most significant factor influencing the cooling effect. The present study, in this way, forms a quantitative basis for the application of NbS for reducing the UHI effect. The outcome of the study helps in identifying the optimum size, shape, vegetation and location of respective NbS in an urban area. Such quantitative evaluation also helps in assessing the preparedness of an urban area concerning increased temperature and gives way to developing a more resilient urban form.
